Ukraine has significantly increased carrot exports in the season 2016/17, and the export volumes have grown almost 6 times year-on-year, according to Fruit-Inform.
They totalled 1,900 tons in July 2016 – May 2017 and peaked in October-November. Moldova was the main importer of Ukrainian carrots and accounted for about 90% of Ukraine’s total exports. Moreover, the Ukrainian carrot export volumes to Moldova increased 17.2 times year-on-year and amounted to 1,700 tons.
The export numbers offered some respite for growers in the country, who suffered through an export drop by 13.4 times in the season 2015/16 which totalled just 322 tones, the lowest result ever. The sharp fall in exports was connected with the ban on imports from Ukraine introduced by the Russian Federation, previously the main export market for Ukrainian carrot exporters.
