According to news reports, Newswanger Meats is voluntarily recalling more than one ton of beef, pork, chicken, sausages, and deli meat because they may have come into contact with coliform bacteria. Coliform bacteria are found in feces and are an indicator that other pathogenic bacteria such as E. coli may be present. More than 2,000 meats are being recalled. No illnesses have been reported to date in connection with this issue.

The company said the meat was produced with water that did not meet Ohio Department of Health requirements and tested positive for coliform bacteria. This type of bacteria can cause GI upset and symptoms such as abdominal cramps, fever, and diarrhea. The water did not test positive for E. coli.

The recalled meats were produced on October 4, 5, and 6, 2017. They have the establishment number EST. 151 inside the Ohio mark of inspection. The lot codes on the recalled products are 17J04, 17J05, 17J06, and OCT0517.

The meat was sold to Ohio City Provisions and Fresh Fork Market in Cleveland, Ohio. Other products were sold at the retail store at Newswanger Meats in Shiloh, Ohio.

The recalled products are: 10 pounds fresh beef stew meat, 10 pounds fresh beef cubed steaks, 3 pounds fresh beef strip steaks, 75 pounds fresh ground beef, 5 pounds fresh breakfast sausage links, 3 pounds fresh maple flavored sausage links, 3 pounds fresh Italian sausage links, 20 pounds fresh pork chops, 10 pounds fresh pork steaks, 8 pounds fresh pork roasts, 1,440 pounds fresh chorizo sausage in 1 pound packages, 3 rind on carcass hogs, 13 pounds chicken (including leg quarters, drumsticks, boneless breast, and thighs), and various sliced deli meats.

If you purchased these products, do not eat them. Throw them away in a sealed container, or take them back to the place of purchase for a refund.
