In the current season, the production of white cabbage in Ukraine may fall to the lowest levels in the last 5 years. Such conclusions were reached by the analysts of "APK-Inform: Vegetables and Fruits" while working on the updated version of the study "Fruit-and-vegetable market of Ukraine-2017: results and forecasts for the next season".
According to the information revealed, in the 2017/18 campaign, Ukraine's gross cabbage harvest will be on average 8% lower than last year. The main reason for the decline is said to be the reduction of the acreage devoted to this crop.
Moreover, the production volume was negatively affected by a reduction in the yield due to unfavourable weather conditions, and experts emphasise that a number of producers report problems with the quality of cabbage, since a significant percentage of the crop is damaged by thrips.
It should be added that the decline in the harvest has already had an impact on prices. Thus, at the moment, despite the good supply on the market, cabbages are on average a third more expensive than in early October 2016.
