The majority of the world's population, up to 87 percent, do not consume enough fruits and vegetables, and their intake is characterised by a lack of variety and quality, according to a study which counted with the participation of more than 200 thousand people from 52 countries.

The Global Report on Phytonutrients, published in the British Nutrition Review in 2014, looked at fruit and vegetable intakes, quality and variety.

The result was that between 60 and 87 percent of the population did not reach the intake recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO); that is, 400 grams or five servings of fruits and vegetables a day, as pointed out in an interview with Notimex by Audra Davies, Professor of Nutrition Sciences.

The most consumed are tropical and citrus fruits (oranges), which contain the phytonutrient called hesperidin, which is an antioxidant; and the least consumed ones are purple fruits and vegetables (blackberries, beet).

Given the study's results, it was concluded that it is necessary to promote the recommended intake of 400 grams a day, to increase the variety by identifying five key phytonutrient colours (white, orange, green, red and purple), and to take a nutritional supplement to reduce those shortcomings.

Audra Davies, vice president of Product Development for Nutrition at Amway, explained that phytonutrients are organic compounds found in fruits, vegetables and other sources that are linked to numerous health benefits and are part of a proper nutrition.

During the presentation of the new generation Double X, a supplement containing 12 vitamins, 10 minerals and 22 plant concentrates (phytonutrients) grown on their organic farms, she explained that the intake of quality supplements can help lead a healthy lifestyle and guarantee quality ageing.

This product is subjected to 25 thousand tests a month to ensure its quality, and can be consumed by vegetarians. It contains no gluten or lactose, does not irritate the stomach and contains peppermint, which helps in the digestion process.

It is contraindicated for patients receiving chemotherapy, because it interferes with the treatment, and the recommendation is to always ask a doctor before consuming any nutritional supplements.
