The China Times reported on July 1st that Taiwan produced an excessive volume of pineapples, which caused the price to fall. Taidong County mayor Huang Jianting visited mainland China in early June to seek new marketing channels. Traders in such places as Wuxi and Xiamen agreed to purchase Taiwan's pineapples. Wuxi dispatched a delegation of traders from the Promotional Association for Exchange between both Sides of the Taiwan Strait to make a "friendship purchase" of pineapples in Taiwan at 25 New Taiwan Dollar [0.82 USD] per kg. This is twice the current price for pineapples on Taiwan. The first shipment of 16.8 tons of pineapples was shipped on June 30th.
Taidong County mayor Huang Jianting stated that this was the first shipment of Taidong pineapples to be sold in mainland China this year. Others in Fujian also responded with the purchase of 500 tons of Taidong pineapples. Xu Ruigui, head of the Department for Agriculture, stated that this shipment included 800 boxes of pineapples from Chenggong area (each box is 15 kg) and 400 boxes from Luye area (each box is 12 kg) for a total of 1200 boxes at approximately 16,800 kg.
