China: Ripe wolfberries turn the Gobi desert red

 The harvest of Chinese wolfberries from Wanmu in Linze County, Gansu, kicks off in mid-July. The ripening wolfberries color the Gobi desert red. Linze County has led the reforestation of the Gobi desert through the plantation of fruit trees in recent years, instead of plowing the land to cultivate fields. The surface area devoted in Linze County to the plantation of red dates, grapes, top-quality pears, Chinese wolfberries, and walnuts reached 9,867 hectares by the end of 2017. The overall production volume of the forest fruit industry in Linze County reached 34.8 thousand tons with a value of 116 million yuan [17.4 million USD].
