Core Tip: The UK has signed a deal to allow the UK to export seed potatoes to China.
The UK has signed a deal to allow the UK to export seed potatoes to China. Scottish producers will certainly benefit from the deal, with around 70 percent of the 100,000 tons of seed potatoes exported annually from Scottish farms.

The market was currently worth an annual £90m to the UK.China, the largest consumer of potatoes in the world, has a developing taste for chips and crisps which now will be ‘fuelled by British produce’.

It was signed by International Trade Secretary Dr Liam Fox during a visit to China where he also announced a deal to allow the export of UK dairy products made with milk from third countries. “The rapidly-growing Chinese market offers huge potential for UK farmers. According to research by Barclays, around 60 per cent of people in China would actually pay more for a product, just because they knew it was British.

“With China expected to have 220 cities with a population of more than a million by 2030 that is a huge market that UK potato farmers will now be able to make the most of.”
