Thallium is a metal produced by smelting other metals. Exposure to high amounts of thallium can adversely affect the nervous system. It can also cause vomiting, diarrhea, and hair loss.
The concentration of thallium in these chicken breast strips does not present an “immediate health hazard,” according to the recall notice, but FSIS is recommending this recall because some sensitive people could experience health problems if they eat this chicken. No illnesses or adverse reactions have been reported to date in connection with this issue.
The recalled product is 8 ounce boxed packages of “Nature Raised Farms Organic Gluten Free Grilled Chicken Breast Strips.” The product has a use-by date of June 20, 2019 and the lot number 1718SUZ01. The product has the establishment number “EST. 1381” on the box’s side panel. The chicken strips were shipped to retail stores across the nation.
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services tested retail packages of this product and found concentrations of thallium. FSIS is working with the company to find the source of the contamination and to prevent any more product from entering the marketplace.
FSIS is concerned that some of this product could be in consumer’s freezers. Check your freezer to see if you bought it. If you did, do not eat it. Throw it away in a sealed and secure garbage can. You can take the product back to the place of purchase for a refund if you’d like.
