The avocado has gradually become more common on the table of Chinese consumers in recent years. Chinese consumers gain a greater familiarity and appreciation for avocados, and the market demand consequently grows. Chinese consumers, and young, female consumers in particular, love avocados not only for its excellent flavor, but also for its nutritional value.
Chile is one of the world's largest avocado production areas. The avocado production volume is estimated to increase by 8.8% this year to an overall production volume of 245 thousand tons. Almost 70% of that volume is destined for export, and the main export destinations are Europe, the USA, and Asia.
The volume of Chilean HASS avocados exported to China increases every year, from 3,967 tons in 2015-2016 to 11,080 tons in 2016-2017, and 14,859 tons in 2017-2018. The overall volume of Chilean avocado export to China is estimated to reach around 17,500 tons in 2018-2019, which would be an increase of 18% in comparison with the same period in the previous year.
The Committee for HASS Avocados will organize promotional activities in November in five major Chinese cities: Shanghai, Beijing, Guangzhou, Shenzhen, and Chengdu. Most promotional activities will take place in the market, but some restaurants and gyms will also participate. At the same time, these promotional activities will be announced through social media and e-commerce platforms. The purpose of all these activities is to introduce Chinese consumers to the excellent flavor and nutritional value of avocados.
