According to the Andalusian Information and Phytosanitary Alert Network, the acreage sown with garlic in the province of Córdoba for the 2019 season is likely to be reduced by 10% compared to the 2018 campaign (when it shrunk by another 10%, reaching some 2,000 hectares). However, Córdoba is expected to remain at the head of the Andalusian garlic sector, accounting for 34% of the production and 38% of the acreage in the region.
The sowing of Chinese, spring or early garlic varieties is in its final stages in the province of Cordoba. The prospect is that the acreage will be reduced, although the sowing is about 95% complete and the figures may still vary. In recent years, the Chinese varieties have been expanding, as they offer higher production yields. In fact, the acreage has become greater than that of purple garlic. Nevertheless, those Chinese varieties are less resistant to pests and diseases, and this year they have suffered more problems than the native purple variety, both in terms of yield and quality.
It is worth noting that the campaign kicked off two weeks later than usual, both for spring and purple garlic. Then, the garlic harvested between May and July was affected by the intense rains registered between March and April.
