Core Tip: The Polish winter season for cabbage is going as well as can be expected.
The Polish winter season for cabbage is going as well as can be expected. With Christmas behind us, there is a shift in popularity. Instead of white and red cabbage, the flavor of the month in January seems to be Chinese cabbage.

The winter season for cabbage holds no real surprises for Polish vegetable exporter Green Best, says Kornelia Lewikowska, export manager for the company: “Currently, the winter season looks as it should at this time of the year. Usually in December we notice a great interest in white and red cabbage and in January many customers begin to buy Chinese cabbage. This year, the caliber and quality of Polish cabbages are very good, but the price of white cabbage is higher compared to last season. When I say higher, we’re talking about three times the price that it was last season. There are smaller amounts of red cabbage, but it is still available on the market.”

The cabbage of Green Best is mostly exported to European countries, according to Lewikowska: “We export our cabbages to Western Europe. Mainly to Holland, Germany, Denmark and Hungary. Our offer includes Chinese, savoy, white and red cabbage. At the moment we’re not feeling any real competition from any other company. This might change in April though, as this is the time that Hungarian cabbage makes its appearance on the market and becomes a strong competitor for the Polish market.”

Naturally Green Best has set goals for this season in terms of volume: “For this season, we would like to sell more cabbage than last year. Every season we want to increase sales of all the products that we offer. Some companies make it a goal to go organic, but this is not the case for us. When it comes to the organic vegetable market in Poland, the companies divide into those that sell conventional vegetables and those that only sell organic vegetables. Green Best aims to be the best supplier of conventional vegetables that it can be!” Lewikowska concludes.
