The Vegetable Cooperative of Komsilga received 48.8 million francs CFA [90,000 USD] from the Japanese government. This donation is intended for the construction of a modern warehouse, with a capacity of 100 tons and suitable for the storage and preservation of onions and cereals, in order to achieve food safety.

Japan thus contributes to the attainment of the PNDES objectives (National Socioeconomic Development Plan). According to the Japanese ambassador, Tamotsu Ikezaki, “in this warehouse, the onion production will keep as long as possible and thus will be available for consumers all year round, which contributes to food safety. It will also be possible to optimize incomes as producers will no longer be forced to sell their harvest at low prices for fear that it will rot. Finally, this will allow for a stronger solidarity between the producers who will be able to join forces to boost vegetable production and contribute to food self-sufficiency in Komsilga.”

This donation is part of Japan’s cooperation program called “donations to local micro-projects contributing to human safety.” The president of the beneficiary cooperative, Salomon Ouédraogo, explained that the storage and preservation of post-harvest products was a problem for the rural communities due to the precarious infrastructures or the lack thereof, despite the State’s efforts.

The donation contract was signed at the Japanese embassy in Burkina Faso.
