Carrefour has launched a "pioneering initiative" in Spain to reduce the consumption of plastic in fresh products. As of today, any customer can use his or her own containers and bags to carry out their purchases from the butchery, charcuterie, fishmonger, and greengrocer.
The company clarifies that the containers can be made of glass or plastic, but in both cases they must be transparent and have a lid. Once the products are weighed, they are wrapped in paper, labeled and placed in the customer's packaging. In the case of bulk fruits and vegetables, the consumers may use their own bags or transparent meshes.
This measure, which aims to reduce the consumption of packaging and encourage the use of reusable packaging, will be implemented in all the of the company's distribution centers. The company presented the measure at its Carrefour Market supermarket in Las Rozas (Madrid), with the presence of Carrefour's commercial director of food, Jorge Ybarra Loring, and Carrefour Spain's RSC director, Maria Quintin.
The project is called Reutiliza ( Reuse) and corresponds to action 101 of the Act for Food program, which includes concrete initiatives to help people eat better and aims to turn the company into the leader in the food transition.
With this measure, the company ratifies its commitment to the reduction of plastic materials, while offering a more sustainable alternative to consumers. "The elimination of plastic waste is a major challenge that requires a collective response," stated sources of the company.
In this sense, Carrefour has developed various initiatives such as the launch of the first recyclable and biodegradable tray for fish products, reducing the grammage in the packaging of prepared dishes, of the bags used in greengrocers, charcuterie packaging, and the lid of some bottles of water, among other measures.
