The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri) reported that a technical team of the General Administration of Customs of the People's Republic of China (GACC) had arrived in Peru to learn about Peru's Agricultural Health Service's (Senasa) health certification process for pomegranates, an important step to establish the requirements that allow the entry of this fresh fruit into their territory.

The team will visit the productive areas of Ica, Chincha, and Arequipa from March 18 to the 22 to observe production sites and packing plants. They will also visit Senasa's Quarantine Treatment Center.

The Chinese specialists will access research on cold treatment for fresh pomegranates that seek to rid the product of the Mediterranean fruit fly (C. capitata), which is being carried out by Senasa with the Ministry of Agriculture of Japan (MAFF) thanks to the economic contribution of the Peruvian private sector, gathered in Progranada.

This scientific research is one of the main activities carried out by Senasa as part of its strategy to access new markets for pomegranates for the benefit of domestic producers.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Irrigation (Minagri), said that Peru expects to increase the export volumes by country, located mainly in Asia and the Middle East. To date, the management for the access of pomegranate to China is quite advanced.
