San Miguel, a leading citrus production and export company in the southern hemisphere, has made its first export of Argentine lemons to India. This first shipment was of 24 tons, which were received yesterday at the Port of Nhava Sheva, in an event where authorities from the Argentine consulate and representatives of IG International, the largest fruit importer in India, participated.
This new market represents enormous opportunities for the citrus industry in general and for San Miguel in particular. This first shipment of lemons aims to initiate the link with Indian customers and to publicize the company's product to consumers in this market.
According to Juan Martin Hilbert, the Commercial Manager for America and Asia of San Miguel, “this export is part of a process of increasing the company's presence in Asia. In 2016, 12% of our exports were sent to these markets and now they account for more than 20% of our total exports. This year we also completed the first shipment of Argentine lemon with cool treatment to Japan and tested citrus shipments from different sources to China.”
“We have the challenge of promoting lemon consumption in Asia. To do this, we are concentrating our efforts in India, Hong Kong, Indonesia, and Japan, which are countries with high potential that demand imported lemon in Argentina's window. We want to continue strengthening this business relationship in the coming years to offer the best of our land to people around the world.”
“The arrival of these first Argentine lemons to new destinations continues to strengthen the country's agro-export potential in citrus fruits and demonstrates the excellent quality of our products. We are proud of the joint work carried out between the public and private sectors to complete commercial openings,” stated Romain Corneille, the CEO of San Miguel.
