Core Tip: There is an increase in prices for high-quality onions on the Russian market.
There is an increase in prices for high-quality onions on the Russian market. According to the growers themselves, this is the first noticeable increase in sales prices for these products since the start of winter. Today, Russian farms in the main production regions offer onions at 11-17 rubles/kg ($0.15-0.23/kg), which is on average 10% more expensive than at the end of the last working week.

Market participants say the reason for the rise in prices was due to a very limited supply of quality onions. This, in turn, is due to many farms continuing to refrain from selling products from storage.

According to experts, onions are of low quality at the moment, unsuitable for long-term storage. The growers note that in the current season the percentage of substandard products in the harvest has grown significantly. This is due to unfavorable weather conditions and, in particular, heavy rains back in September.

Note that at the moment, the price of onion in Russia is already on average 22% higher than at the end of December 2019. At the same time, market participants report that the rise in prices for onions in Russia could be more rapid. However, stable supplies of inexpensive imported onions produced in Kazakhstan exert significant pressure on the price.
