Pan-Indian grower umbrella organization Kisan Sangharsh Samiti has condemned the rising price of packaging material by the Horticulture Produce Marketing and Processing Corporation (HPMC). “The hike must be withdrawn and cartons should be made available to the growers at reasonable prices,” said secretary Sanjay Chauhan.

Chauhan said the cartons were available for Rs 45-55 last year. “This year, the cost is around Rs 55-75, which is a hike of 25 to 30 percent. This will put an overall burden of Rs 80 to 90 crore on the orchardists. At the time of pandemic, the decision taken is wrong,” he said.

According to Chauhan, twenty days ago, the Horticulture Minister had said the prices of the cartons would not be increased this year. “The hike, despite the minister’s assurances, raises doubt over the working of the government. The decision makes it clear that the government is working under the influence of carton manufacturers,” Chauhan told.
