The facility will process chickens, turkeys, rabbits, and other specialty fowl on a fee for service basis. It will also serves as a center for learning best practices for small flock production of poultry and small scale production of meat rabbits.
Foothills Pilot Plant, which is certified by the US Department of Agriculture (USDA) is expected to process more than 10,000 animals during the first year of operation.
The project is guided by the McDowell Economic Development Association (MEDA) and supported by the Independent Small Animal Meat Processors Association of Western North Carolina (ISAMPA).
