Core Tip: China is investigating reports that vegetable producers have been spraying formaldehyde solution to keep cabbage fresh, in the latest food scare to hit the country.

While formaldehyde is generally used as a preservative for laboratory specimens and embalming, ingesting it can be harmful to health and can lead to cancer.

According to reports, several vegetable producers in the eastern province of Shandong, a leading supplier of vegetables, and the neighboring areas have been using formaldehyde on cabbages to keep them fresh during transportation. This practice is reportedly prevalent during the warmer months.

Following the reports, the authorities have started the investigation into the matter.

Cabbage is a staple in China, especially in the northern areas.
