EFSA seeks views on BPA use in packaging

Zoom in font  Zoom out font Published: 2012-05-21  Origin: FBR
Core Tip: The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) is asking stakeholders – including packaging companies and food businesses, to submit data on on migration of Bisphenol A (BPA) from packaging.
This move is a part of the agency to perform a risk assessment of the chemical, which is used in packaging such as the epoxy linings of food and beverage cans.

In 2011, the French food safety agency ANSES noted that dietary and non-dietary exposure of the chemical may be harmful. EFSA said it did not agree with those concerns; however, it vowed to update its risk assessment whenever new data became available.

The project will involve a risk assessment of exposure to dietary and non-dietary sources of the substance. It will be based on occurrence data available in the public domain and scientific literature.

It will also consider exposure of vulnerable groups, such as pregnant women, infants and children.
