Steve Lewis, the Majestic chief executive, expects the wine lovers to notice increases would most in supermarkets, which account for three-quarters of UK wine sales, due to a sharp drop in global production.

The dominance of supermarkets has cut the average bottle of wine sold in Britain costs around £5.

"The price of a bottle of pinot grigio could go up by between 50p and £1 come February/March," he said on Monday after his company reported strong profits despite Britain’s wet summer.

The International Organisation of Vine and Wine warned last month that this year's poor grape harvest due to extreme weather could lead to a worldwide wine shortage.

Winemakers in Argentina and big producers such as Italy and France have all suffered and the organisation forecast a 6pc drop 6pc in global production to 248.2m hectolitres – the lowest level since the seventies.
