Luis Felipe Edwards, a Chile-based family operated winery that produces and exports wines, has acquired 700ha of vineyard in Pumanque, a commune in Colchagua province of O'Higgins region of Chile, for an undisclosed amount.
Located next to the Nilahue estuary in the coastal Colchauga valley, the estate has soil rich in granite and clay loam.
The vineyard is mainly planted with Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc, while the lower altitude areas are planted with Malbec, Syrah, Riesling and Pinot Grigio, reported Decanter.com.
The acquisition is a part of the winery's expansion plans to increase its vineyard holdings by two folds and develop new varieties of wines. The purchase of the Pumanque vineyard follows the recent planting of 150ha vineyards in the Colchagua Valley, 160ha in Leyda Valley and 400ha in Retiro area of Maule Valley.
Luis Felipe Edwards head viticulturist Eugenio Cox was quoted the website as saying that Pumanque has favorable conditions like poor complex soils, coastal influence and low summer temperatures that mature the grapes slowly, resulting in high concentration of fruit, color, aroma, flavor and natural acidity in the grapes.
