Vietnam barramundi farm nets Global Gap nod

Core Tip: A Massachusetts-based fish farming company has received sustainable aquaculture certification for its barramundi farm in Vietnam.
Australis AquacultureAustralis Aquaculture received the Global Gap certification for its barramundi farm in Vietnam, according to a release. The company has already received awards for its Massachusetts-based barramundi, but this is the its first global certification for its Vietnam facility.

“Achieving Global Gap certification means that our entire Vietnam production chain has been thoughtfully considered and recognized for its best practices for sustainable aquaculture,” said Australis CEO Josh Goldman. “These practices include rigorous attention to food safety, minimizing environmental impact, compliance with animal welfare standards as well as stringent worker health and safety requirements.”

Australis began developing its Vietnam operation in 2006. After getting licensing from the Vietnamese government in 2008, the company has worked to develop its operation there. Today, the company employs 100 people in Vietnam and targeting a harvest of more than 6 million pounds in 2014.
