US-based Neogen has developed rapid lateral flow tests for the detection of gliadin (gluten) and sesame that provide accurate results within five minutes after extraction.

Neogen noted that the new Reveal 3-D for Gliadin R5 test detects as little as 5 parts per million (ppm) of gliadin (10 ppm gluten) on environmental surfaces and in rinses. The new test kit, which is in a simple, quick and sensitive format, is in line with the Codex Alimentarius guidelines.

The new test uses the Codex Alimentarius recommended R5 gliadin antibody -- a key test element that captures gliadin proteins in a test sample.

The test can enable food manufacturers in cleaning validations or verification of existing procedures to prevent cross-contamination of sesame within their manufacturing facilities, according to the company.

Neogen's Jennifer Baker said that the new Reveal 3-D tests for gliadin and sesame offer the advantages of the 3-D technology, including rapid time to result and a third line to indicate a very high level of target protein instead of simply presence or absence.

"The new tests add to Neogen's extensive line of food allergen test kits, which includes rapid quantitative and screening tests for peanut, egg, milk, almond, gliadin/gluten, soy, mustard, walnut, sesame, crustacea, lupine and hazelnut," Baker added.

Neogen's food allergen testing products have been developed in close cooperation with the University of Nebraska's Food Allergy Research and Resource Program, or FARRP. FARRP is a food industry and university partnership that was formed to provide research and resource tools to the food industry.

Neogen develops and markets products and services dedicated to food and animal safety. The company's Food Safety Division markets dehydrated culture media, and diagnostic test kits to detect foodborne bacteria, natural toxins, genetic modifications, and food allergens, among others.
