Overwaitea Food is voluntarily recalling Prince brand Tahini as it may be contaminated with Salmonella, according to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA).

The product subject to the recall is 500g Prince brand Tahini bearing UPC code 8 14417 01200 2 and an Expiry date of 19 November 2013.

According to the company, the product being recalled is from Israel and was distributed in Alberta and British Columbia.

No illnesses have been reported associated with the recall.

The CFIA is monitoring the effectiveness of the recall and is working with Canadian importers to have these products removed from the marketplace.

Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in people with weakened immune systems and can result in fever, diarrhea, nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In some cases, infection with Salmonella can cause the organism getting into the bloodstream and result in severe illnesses such as arterial infections, endocarditis and arthritis.
