In 2012 sweetcorn was grown on 24,000 hectares in France, the total harvest was 170,000 tonnes. This put the size of the area back on the same level as in 2008, after the cultivation dipped in 2010. According to a report in the French professional magazine FLD the cultivation was only 16,500 hectares in 2010, reports the German Agrarmarkt Informations-Gesellschaft (AMI) on its website.
The production of conservatives decreased by 4% in 2012, but the production of frozen sweet corn on the other hand grew by 14%. A light decrease in the production area is expected once again in 2013, as the now-closed processing company 'Conserves du Blaisois' was an important production place. The production in France remains concentrated in the Southwest.
France exported around 28,200 tonnes of fresh sweet corn in 2012, compared to around 8,300 tonnes imported. The largest competitor as far as the production of sweet corn is concerned is Hungary. Here the cultivation area increased in 2012 by 20% to 34,000 hectares. Hungary also exports considerable amounts of sweet corn conserves and frozen sweet corn.
