Czech garlic has begun to appear in large domestic retail chains to a larger extent and while its offer was very low in supermarkets in the last few years, now almost a third of the garlic sold is some retail chains is from domestic sources, according to a poll CTK made among retailers.
On the other hand, imports of Chinese garlic are decreasing fast. The area planted with garlic is extending fast in the Czech Republic but by far is still unable to cover domestic demand.
Hypermarkets Globus, for example, this year for the first time included domestic garlic into its offer.
"The sales were a pleasant surprise for us. In half a year, we sold over 27 tonnes of domestic garlic. The average price has decreased to some €6.6 a kilo," said the retail chain's spokeswoman Pavla Hobikova.
The share of Czech garlic in Globus has risen from 10 percent in the previous years to this year's 30 percent.
The share of Czech garlic is rising also in Kaufland outlets.
