In the state of Kerala, the second Covid-19 wave has brought new worries for pineapple growers. Due to curbs and lockdowns, the markets are deserted and prices have plummeted. Despite the festival of Ramadan, pineapple growers have nothing to rejoice about, as they are forced to leave the fruits on the plant.

The President of Pineapple Growers Association Kerala, Baby John, has estimated a staggering loss of Rs. 1 bln (€11 mln) during the festival season alone due to movement restrictions.

A labor shortage has also become acute due to heavy migration of workers to their homes fearing complete lockdowns in the days to come. At present, less than 30% of the necessary work force is available.
