Core Tip: A recent Congressional committee meeting revealed robotics could be the answer to creating jobs in the food industry over the next three years.
Just two decades aroboticsgo, robotics seemed like a concept that was seen in cartoons and science fiction movies. Now robotics are handling routine tasks in a variety of industries. Recent data reveals by 2016, tens of thousands of jobs will exist in food industry jobs related to robotics.

The Reality About Robotics

When people think of robotics, visions of television shows such as “The Jetsons” come to mind. For decades, people believed robotics was just a science fiction concept that would never actually happen. Today robotics are handling an array of jobs in industries such as science, health care and security. As robotics were introduced into the workplace, people became concerned their jobs would be replaced by robots. Last week experts in robotic research gathered in the United States to state robots are not a threat to employment. Instead, they are going to create thousands of jobs in sectors such as the food industry.

During the Congressional Robotics Caucus Advisory Committee gathering, presenters discussed ways to use robotics to create jobs. According to Careers Portal, one of the presenters was Chief Operating Office of Seegrid's, Michael Weiss. During the presentation, Weiss communicated, “While the manufacturing efficiencies associated with robotics are important, the technology is really about operating efficiencies.” Robotics will go beyond the current applications including defense, manufacturing and space research. Now robotics are creating jobs in security, supply chains and the food industry.

More About Robotics and the Food Industry

Another sector currently using robotics is laboratory development and research. Robotics help researchers by handling routine jobs such as liquid handling. As a result, drug discovery is done more quickly so patients get access to the latest drugs in far less time. Researchers are not losing their jobs. Instead, they can devote more time to actual research rather than mundane tasks. The same concept will apply to other jobs in the food industry and more.

Robotics will help reduce costs to help the United States compete in an international marketplace. The president of the Association for Advancing Automation, Jeff Burnstein, indicated robotics will create up to 1.5 million jobs by 2016. It is anticipated 80,000 people in the food industry will be employed in jobs related to robotics. As future research and development marches forward, robotics appears to be a growing career in the food industry. It is sure to open up jobs that pay well and give people a sense of job satisfaction.

Can you imagine burgers being made by a robot? It is already starting to happen! As sectors such as the food industry start to adopt robotics, it brings to mind issues of liability. ABC reports Peter Remine of Seattle is preparing for the days when robots want rights, just like human workers. He has formed an organization called the American Society of Prevention of Cruelty to Robots. While it seems far-fetched right now, few people imagined robots would be in the workplace when they watched “The Jetsons.” It could be food for thought.
