Dutch Supermarket chain Jumbo has developed a three-year cooperation agreement with the North Sea Foundation.
Under the agreement, North Sea Foundation will assess the sustainability of the complete range of Jumbo fish products, including frozen, fresh, canned and other foodstuffs with even a minor fish component.
According to Christien Absil of the North Sea Foundation, the assessment will take fishing techniques, breeding policies and catch procedures into account. Jumbo's fish suppliers will be 'closely involved' in the process, according to the retailer's commercial director, Ed van de Weerd.
Jumbo will be taking part in a sustainable fishing awareness week with the WWF, the MSC, and the ASC from 9 to 13 September.
