Naturex has announced an investment in the SATIN project, which aims to tackle obesity in the EU by developing satiety-enhancing food products to manage weight control.

SATIN is funded by the EU’s 7th Framework Programme (FP7) and has a €6 million budget. Naturex, along with food companies from 9 countries and several European universities, is now part of a consortium dedicated to furthering the project’s goals.

A 2010 IASO/IOTF study showed that 60% of adults and 20% of school age children are obese in the EU. Obesity reduction is a target of many European governments, and SATIN will aim to develop real world solutions to achieve these targets.

A five-year project will see Naturex offering its expertise in biological compounds to determine which ingredients influence satiety. The project hopes to clarify the role of food compounds (like proteins) and food matrices in influencing weight gain.

A series of clinical trials are expected to be carried out in 2016. Naturex will provide several extracts for testing in the hope that the research will lead to new functional food and beverages formulated to improve satiety.
