Household consumption in France fell by 0.1% in September according to Government statistics, compounding a 0.4% fall from August.
It comes as a worry to Europe's second largest economy, as consumption all across the continent was on the rise in September.
Food consumption fell by 0.2% in Septemner.
However, it's not all doom and gloom for the French retail industry as a separate survey, carried out by Nielsen, shows that consumer confidence in France rose by 8 points over the same period.
However 27% of respondents are optimistic about their personal finances.
The online survey of consumer sentiment launched in 2005 by Nielsen takes into account confidence, major concerns and spending habits of 29,000 Internet users in 58 countries.
