New survey by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) on UK drinking trends showed an increasing number of people drinking responsibly.
The Wine and Spirit Trade Association, a British non-profit organization, has welcomed this new survey, which was conducted between 2005 and 2012.
According to the survey, the proportion of men who were frequent drinkers was down from 22% to 14% and women from 13% to 9%.
It also found that men who drank alcohol in the week before being interviewed fell from 72% to 64%, and women from 57% to 52%.
Fifty-eight percent of the adults drank alcohol in the week before being interviewed, a 2% drop for both men and women compared with 2011.
Drinking of the men aged 25-44 in the last week fell from 67% to 63% between 2011 and 2012 and women of the same age from 56% to 50%.
In the same period, the proportion of men who were frequent drinkers was down from 16% to 14%.
WSTA chief executive Miles Beale said: "While there is still work to be done, these figures show that responsible drinking messages are being heard and that more and more people are drinking sensibly, within the guidelines."
