ASEAN shrimp producers have decided to develop a set of common standards for their products that will be suitable with ASEAN nations' conditions and harmonized with other popular international requirements.
The idea came out of a meeting of shrimp producers and exporters in Thailand in December 2013, said the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers (VASEP).
“The set of ASEAN shrimp standards will be divided and applied for extensive shrimp and industrial shrimp,” said Nguyen Huu Dung, VASEP vice chairman.
The ASEAN shrimp standards are expected to be enforced by 2015, when the ASEAN Economic Community is also formed.
On 26 February a seminar to find more comments from shrimp farmers and processors on standards for ASEAN shrimp was held in Can Tho city by VASEP, the Vietnam Fisheries Society and the ASEAN-U.S. Maximizing Agricultural Revenue through Knowledge, Enterprise Development and Trade (ASEAN-US MARKET) project, funded by the U.S. Agency for International Development.
