Tomato production in Sweden is very environmentally friendly. The Swedish greenhouses are heated for 90 percent by renewable energy, as opposed to foreign ones, thus increasing interest among consumers.
The tomato production is growing. About 75 percent of Sweden's grown tomatoes are the usual large round ones, and 25 percent are special tomatoes. A major challenge for the industry is to be price competitive with imported goods. Small speciality shops are selling long-life tomatoes and so fetch a higher price.

Swedish consumers are tempted by the great Swedish assortment of tomatoes, and the environmental benefits of Swedish products. There are tomatoes in different shapes, colours and flavours. The tomatoes retain their good taste. It is very important that they are not cooled.
Rapid flow of information
Increased interest and the trend for locally grown vegetables has led to more and more consumers buying consciously. Current and future consumers make different choices. In addition, the information flows are much faster and the consumer can easily obtain information digitally.
All this creates higher expectations from producers. Expansion of tomato cultivation in Sweden is a major challenge. Entrepreneurs should invest in the greenhouses. Increasing the self-sufficiency in agriculture is desirable.
Swedish tomatoes account for 13 percent of total tomato consumption. At the peak of the Swedish season, production can reach 30 percent. The Swedish tomato season runs from late March / early April to mid-November.
