AccordinSuperValug to the latest figures from Kantar Worldpanel Irish grocery sales grew by 2 per cent in the 12 weeks to 22 June, which is the fastest rate since March 2013.

Grocery inflation is at 2.3 per cent for the quarter, 0.3 per cent lower than the previous quarter.

SuperValu is doing particularly well, with 87,000 new shoppers, which means that almost 75 per cent of Irish households shopped in SuperValu last quarter. They increased their sales by 1.3 per cent and their market share is 24.8 per cent.

Tesco was the only one of the big retailers to see a decrease in sales, which were down 3.4 per cent, however they still have the biggest market share at 26.1 per cent. Dunnes follows Tesco and SuperValu with 21.1 per cent market share and a sales increase of 0.5 per cent.

The discounters Aldi and Lidl are continuing to grow their market share and to increase their sales, which can largely be attributed to their existing customers spending more per shopping trip. Lidl's sales grew by 12.4 per cent to give them a market share of 8.2 per cent, while Aldi's sales grew by 19.5 per cent to give them a market share of 8.1 per cent.

Mark Thompson, business unit director at Kantar said, "Footfall is increasing for all the large retailers at a time when customers aren't wedded to a particular grocer week by week."
