Italian families' grocery shopping habits are increasingly beginning to resemble what they were 10 years ago, as less money is spent on average per month, and less meat is purchased. It reflects the shrinkage the nation's economy has undergone.
Families in Italy spent on average €2,359 on grocery shopping in 2013, which is down 2.5 per cent on 2012, researchers have found; in 2004, the figure stood at €2,381. They are increasingly inclined towards discount stores.
Inflation in Italy was 1.2 per cent last year.
Low-income families and families with two or more children in particular have become more frugal. Half of households spend less than €2,000: the median monthly expenditure per household stands at €1,989, a decrease of 4.3 per cent compared to 2012.
