Core Tip: At $199.99, the Urban Fare in Vancouver’s Coal Harbour now has square watermelons for sale for those with deep pockets.
No matter howsquare watermelon you slice it, these watermelons are expensive. At $199.99, the Urban Fare in Vancouver’s Coal Harbour now has square watermelons for sale for those with deep pockets.

The watermelons that arrived a few days ago are about a foot in length and width and are from Japan, where they’re grown in boxes to make them square.

“The reason they are square is to save space,” explains Tyler Wynn, store manager at the Urban Fare.

The novelty of having square watermelons during our heat wave has made for great fodder in the produce department, said Wynn.

“Everyone asks if they taste like a regular watermelon,” said Wynn. “The answer is yes. People ask how they are grown and if they are genetically modified. The watermelons are not genetically modified.”

The Urban Fare in Coal Harbour received 10 watermelons and have sold four so far.

“A lot of people are using them at parties,” said Wynn. ”It is quite a novelty.”

The Coal Harbour store still has some square watermelons left, but similar to past years, Wynn said they’ll sell out.

“They come in to us in very limited quantities,” said Wynn. He expects they may get another batch sometime next year.
