Morrisons has introduced a new charge to suppliers to cover the expense of approving its own-label products and thus make certain that it is in line with EU and UK law.
Its own products will be revamped, and new products will be introduced. Its trading director, Casper Meijer, said the company hired standards-professionals to ensure new legal issues could arise from the transition:
"This approval stage is intrinsic to our product-development process and provides clear benefit to our suppliers in terms of identifying potential legal compliance issues."
In related news, Morrisons accepted that its own-label products are as much as 20 per cent more costly than those of the leading discounters.
A recent survey compared and contrasted 59 kinds consistently stocked products that Morrisons Online is 20 per cent more expensive than Lidl in 32 cases, and than Aldi in 29 cases.
