UK-based establishment United Biscuits is planning to cut over 200 jobs at its McVitie’s factory in Glasgow, in a move to restructure working practices and manufacturing operations at the site.

Commenting on the job cuts, GMB Scotland union regional secretary Harry Donaldson said: "This has come at the worst time of year in the run up to Christmas and the workforce in understandably devastated.

"Many of the factory workers are women, the staff are not paid a huge amount, and they will have had plans for Christmas that will now be in serious doubt.

"We are now looking to get around the table with management and try and minimise the impact of these cuts on the workers."

However, some of the employees can apply for 36 new posts at the factory.

The company currently employs 7,100 people with 4,600 in the UK at sites including London, Manchester, Carlisle, Halifax, Liverpool and Leicestershire.

Murat Ülker's Yildiz Holdings acquired McVitie's factory in November, in a £2bn deal. Kellogg's and Burton's also participated to acquire United Biscuits.
