Special Fruit kicks off the season for organic blueberries, which they grow themselves in Portugal. In 2012, the company invested in a partnership with a grower of organic blueberries, among others. Mirtisul is located in the Alentejo region, which has the perfect climate for growing berries.
Special Fruit believes in the development of the organic segment, considering it a good supplement to its product range. Organic products are healthier for people and the environment.
Currently the organic product range consists of various varieties of blueberries, including Sharp Blue, Misty, O’Neal, Georgia Gem and Star. The company hopes to further extend its range, in terms of availability and types of products.
The season runs until mid-June and represents an overall volume of 140 tons. Peak season is from week 23 until 25. Various types of packaging are available upon request. The company developed a special BerryFresh label for these berries, which emphasises the beneficial properties of organic berries as well as making the product even easier to recognise for health-conscious consumers. The BIOgarantie logo was also included on the label. The berries are also GlobalGap certified.
