Despite the intense heat, there are no concerns about the possibility of watermelons running out in the market. According to experts, the domestic harvest will suffice to cover demand, even after St Lawrence, and imports could be resorted to if necessary.
In recent days, the price of watermelons at domestic retail chains has stood at HUF 70 per kilo (0.22 Euro). According to market experts, the concern about shortages is exaggerated. Such rumours are considered lies intended to boost prices, especially if we also take into account the fact that export prices are 15-30 percent higher than the domestic ones.
"The hot weather is making work difficult for the growers, but it is rather a reason for them to rejoice, since it results in increased consumption volumes," stated Tamas Oravecz, president of the National Association of Watermelon Producers.
