Manisa Viticulture Research Institute announced that they have submitted 5 new grape varieties for registration. Currently, the new varieties are being processed and the names assigned to the varieties will be decided based on the results of a survey completed by growers.
The Viticulture Research Institute has been working on developments in the viticulture industry since it was established in 1989, emphasises the director of the institute Akay Unal. “There are 1,453 grape varieties in the national collection. Moreover, in order to obtain new varieties, we are working on 13,000 hybrids. During this year, out of 102 grape types that we have been working on, 5 varieties have been offered for registration,” he said.
When the registration process is complete, manufacturers will be provided with the opportunity to generate more income from new varieties, Unal states, “At this stage, the 5 grape varieties to be registered have no name. The registration phase is about to end and with the results of a survey completed by manufacturers, we will determine the names of the new grape varieties,” he said.
