The UN's food aid agency said Monday it will distribute 7,200 tons of food in drought stricken northeastern Uganda in the rest of this year.

The World Food Program (WFP) said in a statement that 45 percent of Karamoja's 1 million population are food-insecure due to the lean season from April to September which leads to a decline in food stocks at household level and contributes to higher food prices.

"If needs in the region increase amid this lean season, the WFP may provide an additional ration through the community based supplementary feeding program which treats moderate acute malnutrition in the hotspot areas," it said.

According to the agency, the malnutrition level in the region reached its highest since 2010 with Moroto district posting the worst global acute malnutrition rate of 18.3 percent, which is above the emergency threshold of 15 percent.
