In only a month, the wholesale price of cucumbers in Bulgaria has increased by 44%, reaching 2.57 Lev per kilo (1.31 Euro), according to data supplied by the State Commission for Commodity Exchanges and Wholesale Markets. The main reason for this has allegedly been the large market share of imported cucumbers, as reported by the department.
On the other side of the scale, the wholesale price of tomatoes has dropped by more than 0.40 Lev (0.20 Euro) per kilo; in fact, the only other vegetable which has registered a price increase has been garlic, which currently costs 4.84 Lev per kilo (2.48 Euro), compared to 4.40 Lev (2.25 Euro) in mid-January.
There have also been increases in the prices of citrus fruits and bananas; the latter have become over 15% more expensive, while mandarin prices have gone up by 14.17 percent and lemons by 15.46 percent.
