As every year, the transition stage between the domestic and import vegetable season is underway. Last week, there was apparently a dip in both categories, with cucumbers, tomatoes and aubergines taking the biggest toll. Those prices appear to be growing once again and more supermarkets are switching to domestic produce.
Aubergine prices on the rise again
According to a Belgian importer, Spanish fruit and vegetables are again becoming more expensive. "Aubergines prices are on the rise again. The Belgian product stood at 60 cents last week and now reaches around 1.30 Euro. Spanish aubergines cost five Euro per box, so one Euro per kilo."
"Peppers are doing really well," he says. "Even broccoli and iceberg lettuce, which had not generated much during the whole season, are on the rise. Due to the warm weather in Spain, production has remained at a high level. Broccoli and iceberg lettuce will remain available for a little while in the market, but this short period with better prices will not suddenly make up for the results of the rest of the season. Demand for these two products is not exceptional, but it is expected to increase. Given that the volumes will no longer grow considerably, prices will be given a boost. Everything now depends on what the market is going to demand."
