Greek onion producers are not hiding their concern, given that production volumes are likely to increase and cause prices to collapse, taking into account that onions are characterised by their high production costs.
Indeed, according to data from a report in the newspaper Agrenda, the number of plantings nationwide has more than tripled compared to last year, boosted by the high prices recorded this winter. Not only have those who were already growing the product increased their plantings, but also others, who were cultivating cotton and potatoes.
As a result of this, onion producers from Thebes expect the upcoming season, which will kick off in July 2016, to be disastrous, with a very foreseeable risk of an inability to sell all the volumes produced.
Indicative of the winter season conditions is the fact that, this week, the producer price reached 50-54 cents per kilo, following a persistent upward trend, according to the producer Ileía Níko Georgakópoulo, noting that, in the corresponding week last year, the price stood at 40 cents per kilo on average. He also stated that the yields were up to 50% lower than in a normal year.
