This week, Shanghai Huizhan wholesale market started to sell a cabinet of Chilean cherries, which triggered a buying boom.
Judging by its packaging and labels, the packaging date of this batch of Chilean cherries was January 26, 2015, and they didn't arrive to the Shanghai wholesale market until this week due to factors such as the transshipment, customs clearances etc.. these cherries were Regina breed, and they remained in high quality in terms of sweetness and hardness, thanks to good storage conditions. Therefore retailers swarmed to buy them despite their high price position: 810 Yuan per box (around 5 kilos).
Although a small amount of domestically produced Dalian cherries came to the markets as well, there are still a few months to go before the domestic cherries reach their ripe season. Therefore, the current cherries in the markets don't taste as good as they are supposed to be, which created a huge market potential for imported Chilean cherries.
Chilean cherries cost between 140-150 Yuan per kilo.
