The State CPI(M) is getting ready to celebrate Vishu with organic vegetables.
Party State secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan said here on Tuesday that the party would open around 1,000 organic vegetable outlets across the State to mark Vishu.
The party had undertaken an intensive popular campaign during last Vishu and Onam to make organic vegetables available to the people. The present plans were part of that initiative, the CPI(M) leader said.
He said the CPI(M) had taken the initiative to organise large-scale sowing of vegetable seeds and planting of saplings beginning January.
This was done with the help of local government institutions and cooperative banks.
As part of the initiative, homes were encouraged to cultivate vegetables in grow bags and flower pots. Each home was encouraged to cultivate a particular variety of vegetable.
Mr. Balakrishnan said the effort of the party was to make Kerala self-sufficient in vegetable cultivation and to ensure that people got to consume vegetables free from pesticide residues.
The effort would be to take the initiative forward with the participation of farmers and to increase the number of the existing 100 outlets in the days to come, the CPI(M) leader said.
