Summer is at its peak in Thane and lake city residents are buying more and more exotic fruits, such as wood apples, passion fruit, mangosteens, rambutans, longans, kiwis and dragon fruits.

While seasonal fruits like mangoes and litchis are still in demand, city vendors say they have seen a steep rise in customers who have been buying exotic fruits for desserts and juices.

"We initially used to sell only seasonal fruits like litchis but realized that there are buyers for such fruits. We recently started selling kiwis and dragon fruit too. Even though a dragon fruit costs Rs 40 and eight kiwis are sold for Rs 100 they are in demand," said Gajanand Gupta, a vendor at Talao Pali.

As these fruits are not commonly grown locally, they are usually imported from other countries. California grapes cost Rs 250 to Rs 300 for a kilogram. A fruit store owner on Ram Maruti Road, Alka Gawade, said she stocks kiwis and apples from New Zealand, wood apples, passion fruits and different types of litchis.
